The Internet has a very different sound than the aggressive material we’re used to hearing from Odd Future, but the collective was ever-present on Friday night. She’s also a female singing love songs about females, while managing to look strong yet vulnerable, inviting yet edgy. Syd owned the stage at the Mod Club, making it easy to forget that she is just 20 years old, yet already a producer, DJ and vocalist who owns a sixth of a record label. (Despite the hook of “I wanna, I wanna, do you wanna do some cocaine?” she offered up a “don’t do drugs” warning when the song was over, likely to a few parents present in an all-ages crowd.) Syd’s soft, sweet voice purred on tracks like Love Song – 1 and They Say, and tempted on She DGAF and Cocaine. Working their way through material off of Purple Naked Ladies, they interacted with the crowd throughout a set that was just short of an hour. Led by Odd Future producers Syd and Matt Martians, The Internet closed out their week-long East Coast tour in Toronto.
After, Syd shyly told everyone that “I’m not Justin Timberlake, but I’m trying.” The constant shouts of support from the crowd made it clear that Syd and The Internet didn’t have to try to be anything other than who they were.
